Backbase Enterprise Ajax 4.2 introduces a new streamlined Community License. The new license makes it really easy to start working with Backbase Ajax software. This article includes a summary of the license terms, and answers to frequently asked questions.
The Community License means that:
All Backbase server software can be used for free on up to 2 server-CPUs per company
NOTE: This summary is provided for your convenience, but the current copy of the Backbase Community License at http://www.backbase.com/legal is always the leading document.
License Overview
The Community License allows you to use all Backbase software that needs to be installed on a web server free of charge on up to 2 CPUs per company. ‘Server software’ means the Backbase Client Edition, JSF Edition, Struts Connector, Portal Connector and Data Services. You can install it on maximum one dual-CPU server or two single-CPU servers per organization. We don’t count processor cores. We do not charge for developer seats for our server products.
Commercial Use
The Community License also supports commercial projects, as long as you comply with the CPU limit. An additional commercial license is available to businesses needing more CPUs or professional support and software maintenance (contact us).
OEM and Redistribution
Commercial projects that embed the Backbase software need an OEM agreement: please contact us for details. The Community License can be used during the full evaluation period.
Open source projects can include the Backbase software free of charge, as long as they include the text below in the readme file or the release notes.
“This software includes Backbase Ajax software under the terms of the Backbase Community License, which allows use on up to 2 server-CPUs per company. See http://www.backbase.com/legal/ for a current copy of the Backbase Community License.”
In all other usage scenarios, please contact us.
Educational Use
Backbase Enterprise Ajax can be used without CPU limits if you use it to teach a class at a school or university. For other educational projects you can use the standard Community License for up to 2 CPUs. For more than 2 CPUs and for support we provide an education discount on our commercial license: please contact us for details.
Support and Commercial licenses
The Community License does not include professional support. The Backbase Developer Network (BDN), however, provides a discussion forum where the community can freely ask and answer questions. The developer network includes many additional references, technical articles, tips and techniques, tutorials and more, all free of charge. However, we do not guarantee any type of service levels on the BDN. For guaranteed service levels we provide a Commercial License: please contact us for details.
FAQ
What do you mean with ‘2 server-CPUs’?
Even though Ajax software is client-side, you will have to copy files to the server. We count the number of CPUs on all the servers to which you copy Backbase files. We don’t count CPU cores.
Do I need a license key?
No, Backbase Enterprise Ajax does not use a license key. As a service, Backbase periodically audits customers to make sure that they comply with the license agreement.
I’m a teacher: can I use Backbase software in my class?
Yes, you can do that free of charge. We even have some education materials available for you: contact us at training-us@backbase.com to request the training package.
I work for a school/university: do I get a discount?
It’s free to use Backbase for teaching a class. For all other projects you can use it on up to 2 server-CPUs per school. We have an educational discount if you have more than 2 server-CPUs or if you require support and maintenance.
How is this different from the old Community Edition?
The old Community Edition was a limited version of the Client Edition. The current Community License gives you access to the full Client Edition and all Java products (JSF, Struts, Portal and Data Services).
Will the Visual Ajax Builder be available under the Community License?
The license for the Visual Ajax Builder has yet to be determined.
